What is a 504?

Students with disabilities are protected under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.  A 504 is a plan developed by schools to provide accommodations for students to ensure they receive equal access to education.

Unlike an Individualized Education Program (IEP), which includes specialized instruction, a 504 plan encompasses accommodations that do not require specialized instruction. These accommodations might include changes to the learning environment, additional time to test or complete assignments, or the provision of assistive technology, all aimed at helping the student succeed in the general education curriculum.
