Unsafe Behavior
What is a "Safe School" violation? It depends on the district. Utah has laws that require districts to make their own safety policies. Interpreting those policies is even more problematic. There is a lack of consistency between districts and even among schools within the same district.
Here are a few tips for responding when your child does something unsafe at school:
-
Teach your child to ask for a parent when called to the office.
-
Teach your chid to insist on a parent being present before talking with law enforcement or consenting to a search.
-
When you arrive at school, do not allow your child to make a statement to administration or law enforcement.
-
Talk to administration or law enforcement without your child present to learn what your child has been accused of.
-
Take your child home and interview him/her.
-
Provide a written statement to administration summarizing your child's side of the story.
-
If your child is suspended, request written documentation of the suspension. This may be a form or a letter. Digital is the same as a paper copy.
-
Always ask for an appeal to the suspension decision.
-
Seek legal counsel. Once a district has made a decision regarding your child's discipline, it is nearly impossible to change their mind. The best time to get help is before the decision is final.
